Meet Our Doctors

Dr. Matthew King

Dr. Matthew King, Ph.D., Licensed Clinical Psychologist

Hello! I am a licensed clinical psychologist and I graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in 2019. Prior to that, I also completed my Bachelor’s degree in psychology and Master’s degree in counseling psychology at UIUC. I have been in private practice since 2021 and have offered individual therapy, psychological assessment, and clinical supervision to other mental health providers.

Therapy can be a vulnerable choice and one that requires commitment and authenticity. As a queer person, I believe it is particularly important to find a space where you can be your authentic self, and I would like to provide an environment where you feel safe to do so. I believe that therapy is a place to be vulnerable, learn about yourself, modify behaviors, and develop more connected relationships. It is a space that is collaboratively constructed to feel heard, accepted, and adequately challenged so that you may safely explore with me whatever brings you to therapy. Particularly important to me is ensuring that our space is inclusive of all genders, abilities, sexual orientations, racial/ethnic identities, religious or spiritual background, and other salient cultural identities. As your therapist, I strive for the same qualities that I would seek in my own interpersonal relationships: openness, transparency, acceptance, and connection. My hope is to help you access the skills, confidence, and compassion you already possess and allow those to flourish in your own relationships.

Expertise/Special Interests: In my practice, I am open to and skilled at working with college students and young adults. My work has primarily focused on the intersection of LBTQ+ and neurodivergency, and I have developed a speciality for working with queer, trans, gender expansive, and neuroqueer individuals. Clinically, this often involves areas such as improving interpersonal relationships, understanding and living with anxiety, unpacking family of origin issues and formative relationships, and addressing systemic issues and systems of oppression.
